SERIAL PORT

There seems to be standard dual Uart'sArt's, Arte's, Arty's, At's, Arts, Artus, Oat's, Quart's, Bart's, Cart's, Hart's, Mart's, Dart's, Fart's, Kart's, Part's, Tart's, Wart's, Uta's, Ute's, Auto's, Oort's, Aorta's, Audy's, Utah's, Artsy, It's, Rat's, Artie's, Artur's, Artus's, Ats, Autos, Ar's, Arda's, Ur's, Urdu's, Aortas, Aunt's, Aura's, Burt's, Curt's, Kurt's, Quarto's, Yurt's, Ad's, Audi's, Utes, Ates, Eats, Oats, Quarts, Dar's, Act's, Ant's, Ear's, Oar's, Tar's, Adar's, Carts, Darts, Farts, Harts, Karts, Marts, Parts, Tarts, Warts for possible dual serial
support on this board.

Here is a tutorial on how to add dual serial ports to this device:
Serial Port Tutorial [20]
This describes how to build an expansion board to add UARTsUAR Ts, UAR-Ts, Arts, Art's, Artus, Artsy, Ats, Eats, Oats, Quarts, Carts, Darts, Farts, Harts, Karts, Marts, Parts, Tarts, Warts, Utes, Ates, Autos, Ardys, Arty's, Aortas, At's, Oates, Uta's, Its, Rats, Arte's, Outs, Ardis, Art, Aunts, Oat's, Aughts, Auras, Hurts, Quart's, Quartos, Yurts, Bart's, Cart's, Hart's, Mart's, Ads, Dart's, Fart's, Kart's, Part's, Tart's, Wart's, Acts, Ar's, Arte, Arty, Oort's, Ur's, Utah's, Ute's, Alts, Ants, Ears, Oars, Tars and a
MAX232 chip to the WL500g. I assume that UARTsUAR Ts, UAR-Ts, Arts, Art's, Artus, Artsy, Ats, Eats, Oats, Quarts, Carts, Darts, Farts, Harts, Karts, Marts, Parts, Tarts, Warts, Utes, Ates, Autos, Ardys, Arty's, Aortas, At's, Oates, Uta's, Its, Rats, Arte's, Outs, Ardis, Art, Aunts, Oat's, Aughts, Auras, Hurts, Quart's, Quartos, Yurts, Bart's, Cart's, Hart's, Mart's, Ads, Dart's, Fart's, Kart's, Part's, Tart's, Wart's, Acts, Ar's, Arte, Arty, Oort's, Ur's, Utah's, Ute's, Alts, Ants, Ears, Oars, Tars are specified because
that particular hardware revision of the WL500g does not have UARTsUAR Ts, UAR-Ts, Arts, Art's, Artus, Artsy, Ats, Eats, Oats, Quarts, Carts, Darts, Farts, Harts, Karts, Marts, Parts, Tarts, Warts, Utes, Ates, Autos, Ardys, Arty's, Aortas, At's, Oates, Uta's, Its, Rats, Arte's, Outs, Ardis, Art, Aunts, Oat's, Aughts, Auras, Hurts, Quart's, Quartos, Yurts, Bart's, Cart's, Hart's, Mart's, Ads, Dart's, Fart's, Kart's, Part's, Tart's, Wart's, Acts, Ar's, Arte, Arty, Oort's, Ur's, Utah's, Ute's, Alts, Ants, Ears, Oars, Tars on
board. Can we get confirmation on which wl500g/gx's have UARTsUAR Ts, UAR-Ts, Arts, Art's, Artus, Artsy, Ats, Eats, Oats, Quarts, Carts, Darts, Farts, Harts, Karts, Marts, Parts, Tarts, Warts, Utes, Ates, Autos, Ardys, Arty's, Aortas, At's, Oates, Uta's, Its, Rats, Arte's, Outs, Ardis, Art, Aunts, Oat's, Aughts, Auras, Hurts, Quart's, Quartos, Yurts, Bart's, Cart's, Hart's, Mart's, Ads, Dart's, Fart's, Kart's, Part's, Tart's, Wart's, Acts, Ar's, Arte, Arty, Oort's, Ur's, Utah's, Ute's, Alts, Ants, Ears, Oars, Tars on
them?

If all this gets too hard, you could always plug in a USB-Serial
adapter and compile in support for that instead.

DISCUSSION

17/7/05 Peter melb_ap [22] : Standard openwrtopenest, opened, operate, operetta, Penrod, opponent, opined, upend, upended, operator, operand for the broadcombroad com, broad-com, broadloom, boredom, Braddock, breadcrumb, brougham
chipsetchip set, chip-set, chirpiest, cheapest, chips, chicest, choppiest, chipped, hippest, chaplet, chest, hipster, Chip's, chip's, chirps, chops, Christ, chiefest, chillest, choicest, chaste, sharpest, shiest, ripest, chirped, chaps, ships, ship's will run on this device, but there are also versions
specifically compiled to take advantage of the mini-pci slot thatsthat's, thetas, Thad's, that, hats, tats, Thais, thaws, Ghats, chats, ghats, teats, whats, thuds, theta's, Thant's, Thar's, thwarts, theaters, hat's, threats, throats, Thea's, Thia's, Theda's, chat's, ghat's, teat's, what's, Ta's, Th's, thud's, theater's, threat's, throat's
standard in the wl500g unit.

I've done some testing and found that the altherosAlthea's, allegros, Alethea's, Lotharios, Alberio's, authoress, Albireo's, authorise, allures, Alvaro's, Alvera's, ulcerous, Alighieri's, Almire's, ultras, Algeria's, Lothario's, Olivero's, Allegra's, Almeria's, Ellery's a/b/g cards do
work , but watch the revisions - refer for supported cards [23]

This is a great little unit, for not much more than a WRT54G [24] you
get the big plus of being able to change the mini-pci radio for one
with a high receive sensitivity or 802.11a support. You can also even
add a memory key or hard disk storage, use the usbsub, USN, Sb, US, us, USA, USO, USS, use, usu, USP or printer port for
control or content purposes, and do the normal routing / web
functions.

I've been evaluating this unit and it could be another option for the
node in a box project where the uplinkup link, up-link, unlink, plonk, plunk, plank, upland, Planck, Opalina, Opaline is a bit more difficult or
requires 802.11a

19/7/05 DanFlettDandled, Dangled, Tangled, Donalt, Deflate, Inflate, Snaffled, Conflate, Defiled, Anviled, Tenfold, Donald [25] : I've recently bought 2 of these for myself.
I'm using one as my Internet router using modified firmware from
wl500g.info [26]. I'm using their firmware version 1.7.5.9-5 which has
the BPALoginBologna, Blowgun, Ballgown, Blagging, Paleogene, Belgian, Balking, Bulging, Epiloguing, Plaguing, Polygon, Ploughing, Balkan, Balcony, Backlogging, Baulking, Blocking, Plugging, Blacking, Pillaging, Bilking, Bulking, Blacken software compiled in to allow use on TelstraTolstoy, Tilsit, Lustre, Tapestry, Tilsit's, Destroy, Listeria, Texture, Telemetry, Tallest, Toiletry, Dalston, Duelist, Tolstoy's, Decilitre BigpondBig pond, Big-pond, Burgeoned, Duckpond, Beckoned, Bookend, Burgundy, Bargained, Bluepoint, Ballpoint, Backhand
Cable. It seems to work fine for me. It doesn't show me what IPIPA, OP, UP, PI, IO, IMP, I, P, AP, KIP, PIP, RIP, VIP, DIP, HIP, LIP, NIP, SIP, TIP, YIP, ZIP, IA, IE, IR, PP, WP, II, DP, GP, HP, ID, IL, IN, IQ, IT, IV, JP, KP, LP, MP
address I've received from BigpondBig pond, Big-pond, Burgeoned, Duckpond, Beckoned, Bookend, Burgundy, Bargained, Bluepoint, Ballpoint, Backhand via DHCPDHAKA, HICCUP, TEACUP, TOECAP in the web interface - but
you can telnet in and do an 'ifconfig'.
I intend to install OpenWRTOpenest, Opened, Operate, Operetta, Penrod, Opponent, Opined, Upend, Upended, Operator, Operand [27] on the other one and have a play -
I'd like to compile in support for USBSUB, USN, SB, US, USA, USO, USS, USE, USU, USP WLANLAN, ELAN, WAN, ALAN, KLAN, CLAN, FLAN, PLAN, WEAN NICsNI Cs, NI-Cs, Nicks, Incs, Mics, Ni's, Nice, Nick, Nico, Nils, Nibs, Nips, Nits, Pics, Sics, Tics, Inc's, Bic's, Mic's, Nick's, Nico's, Nice's, Nil's, Ric's, Vic's, Nib's, Nit's, Pic's, Tic's so that extra radios
can easily added via USB.

6/8/05 DanFlettDandled, Dangled, Tangled, Donalt, Deflate, Inflate, Snaffled, Conflate, Defiled, Anviled, Tenfold, Donald [28] : Just an update to say that I've installed
OpenWRTOpenest, Opened, Operate, Operetta, Penrod, Opponent, Opined, Upend, Upended, Operator, Operand [29] WhiteRussianWhite Russian, White-Russian, Whitewashing, Iteration, Wittering, Reiteration, Rhetorician, Watering, Derision, Veteran, Nitration, Patrician, Titration [30] RC2 one of my WL500g units and it works
very well. I've managed to mount a USBSUB, USN, SB, US, USA, USO, USS, USE, USU, USP memory key and a 60GB hard
drive (not at the same time - I don't have a USBSUB, USN, SB, US, USA, USO, USS, USE, USU, USP hub yet). For some
reason OpenWRTOpenest, Opened, Operate, Operetta, Penrod, Opponent, Opined, Upend, Upended, Operator, Operand [31] only reports 2.2MB of flash space onboardinboard, on board, on-board, inboards, outboard, aboard, onward, unbid, snowboard, unbar, overboard so it's
getting cramped already. I'm going to investigate running a root
filesystemfile system, file-system, falsest, system, disesteem, subsystem, filibuster, flextime, ecosystem, firestorm, fluster, flossed, flosses, flossiest, filibusters, filmiest, flossies, filibuster's, Flossie's off external flash memory once I'm sure I can easily "dual
boot" OpenWRTOpenest, Opened, Operate, Operetta, Penrod, Opponent, Opined, Upend, Upended, Operator, Operand [32] - from either the internal flash or off an external
flash. Once I've done that I'll install Samba on the external memory
and share files off the 60Gb HDD. I'm also going to experiment with
using a USB-Serial adaptor and a USBSUB, USN, SB, US, USA, USO, USS, USE, USU, USP dial-up modem.
I followed this _HowTo [33] - with the important difference is that
my WL500g has an OHCIOH CI, OH-CI, OCH, OHIO, OHO, CI, OH, OI, LOCI, OHS, MCI, OBI, OHM, SCI, XCI, OHSA, OUCH, OHMS, OHOS, ONCE, LUCI, RICI, OHM'S usbsub, USN, Sb, US, us, USA, USO, USS, use, usu, USP controller, not UHCIUH CI, UH-CI, CI, UH, LUCI, UZI, MCI, UHF, UPI, URI, SCI, UNI, XCI, RICI, LOCI - so I added the
usb-ohci_ module, not the _uhci_ module.

27/7/05 John, Node FOA: I have been playing with one of these little
gems for the last couple of days and finding it a great unit.
I have flashed it with 1.9.2.7-6b firmware from the
http://oleg.wl500g.info/ site (it still uses the ASUSAS US, AS-US, ASS, ASKS, ASPS, ANUS, AU'S, ASA'S, ASE'S, ASP'S, ASS'S, ASH'S web page
interface with some added goodies). There is a nice little "howto" at
www.macsat.com/ipkg.php [34] on how to setup a 256Meg USBSUB, USN, SB, US, USA, USO, USS, USE, USU, USP stick or
external USBSUB, USN, SB, US, USA, USO, USS, USE, USU, USP drive and make it mount on bootupboot up, boot-up, booty, Boot, boot, Boote, boots, Baotou, bootee, Boot's, Bootes, boot's, booted, bout, bloop, BTU, Btu, booty's, bop, bot, bouts, stoup, biota, Batu, boat, bots, Boote's, booed, Baotou's, bout's and install ipkgpkg, EKG, UPC, OPEC, USCG, ECG, agog, epic, apex
package system. I have even got midnitemidnight, minute, midwinter, mintier, minuet, minuted, minuter, minted, Minot, Minuit, Monte, Mountie, minter, Mandie, Masonite, Mendie, mint, modernity, Minette, mediate, mandate, minder, Minta, midnights, minty, midst, Maronite, minded, Mindy, Monet, Monti, mutinied, didn't, dint, martinet, midpoint, mind, Danit, Dante, dinette, magnate, Mandi, Manet, Minda, midnight's, dominate commander working on this for
ease of use. So far the unit has been working great,
and as Peter says, the Mitsubishi R100 is the same unit as the
WL-500G, the cost of the Mitsubishi's are around the $110+ mark

6/8/05 - DanFlettDandled, Dangled, Tangled, Donalt, Deflate, Inflate, Snaffled, Conflate, Defiled, Anviled, Tenfold, Donald [35] : Wow John, where can you get them for $110?
The cheapest I've seen the R100 is for about $125 on ausprices.com.au.

28/7/05 dnaDNA, Dan, Dana, Dena, Dina, Dona, Dyna, dona, DA, Na, Edna, DEA, DOA, Ana, Ina, RNA, Una If you follow the "how to" John mentions above it's
probably a good idea to skip making a swap partition on a flash drive.
These embededembed ed, embed-ed, embedded, embodied, emended, embeds, embed, impeded Linux versions don't need swap to run and it will
probably destroy the flash drive very quickly. Linux allocates memory
as much as possible, so the swap will be utilized. The Flash chip
technology needs to do an erase before each write so everytimeevery time, every-time, overtime, Everette, override, Everett, overate, overwrite, Evered, everyday, erratum, overarmed, Everett's, Everard, overarm, overrate, Ephrayim, Everette's, Ephraim a page
is swapped it will identify the sector, decide what needs to be kept,
copy that data elsewhere, erase the sector then copy the data back.
Flash drives have a finite erase/write life and are not really
suitable for this type of use.

30/7/05 Peter melb_ap [36] I just tested to see if this unit can work
with a usbsub, USN, Sb, US, us, USA, USO, USS, use, usu, USP hub and yes it can. I used a powered usbsub, USN, Sb, US, us, USA, USO, USS, use, usu, USP hub in this test,
but managed to run a webcamweb cam, web-cam, became, welcome, become, begum, bigamy, Viacom and memory key at the same time just with
the standard firmware.

This means that the only real limit to what this unit can run will be
memory although you could swap that to say a disposable 128Mb key.

What do you think dna?

30/7/05 dnaDNA, Dan, Dana, Dena, Dina, Dona, Dyna, dona, DA, Na, Edna, DEA, DOA, Ana, Ina, RNA, Una Yeah, go for it! It would be interesting to see how long
it did work for. May be a little slow paging in and out but probably
OK for this sort of use.

2/9/05 Peter melb_ap [37] OkOK, OJ, Oak, Oik, KO, OKs, Pk, K, O, AK, UK, Ox, Wok, OE, OH, OR, Ck, Oh, Oi, Or, Ow, Wk, Bk, Gk, Mk, OB, OD, ON, OS, OT, Ob, Os, Oz, SK, Of, Om, On, Op I have made some further progress in
using these units with 802.11A
I setup a test link over 400Mtrs with an average LOSLAOS, LEOS, LOIS, LOOS, LOSE, LOSS, LOWS, LS, LOBS, LOGS, LOPS, LOST, LOTS, LO, OS, L'S, LES, LOU, LOY, LBS, LOO, LOW, LOX, COS, DOS, LON, LOT, ROS, SOS, GOS, HOS, LOB, LOG, LOP, MOS, NOS, LAO'S, LEO'S, LI'S, LOO'S, LOU'S, LOY'S, LA'S, LE'S (ie lots of
trees) using a cm9 mini pcipic, CPI, Ci, pi, PC, psi, PCs, Pei, poi, sci, MCI, xci, PCB, PCP, pct, phi card in the wl500g at each end using 18Db
rojoneRockne, Rhone, Rooney, Jone, rejoin, Roxine, Regine, recon, Roanne, Roxane, Romona, Rosene, redone, rezone, rooking, Joane, Jonie, Ronnie, rookie, crone, crooner, krone, rejoined, Jon, Ron, Rowen, Roanoke, Rowney, croon, Regen, forgone, Jane, Joni, June, Rene, Rona, cone, coon, gone, goon, roan, rook, rune, coroner, groyne, Trojan panels. One Unit was in master mode (AP) and the other in
managed mode (client). The OS was openwrtopenest, opened, operate, operetta, Penrod, opponent, opined, upend, upended, operator, operand RC2 available at this link
[38].

Signal on the client end was reporting -71 although i'mI'm, IBM, ism, I'd, h'm, IMO, om, um, aim, IMF, IN, In, imp, in, I, M, i, m, Jim, Kim, Sim, Tim, dim, him, rim, vim, AM, Am, EM, Em, am, em, BM, Cm, FM, Fm, GM, HM, IA, ID, IE, IL, IQ, IT, IV, Ia, Io, Ir, It, MM not sure how
accurate that is, and i locked the rate at 24M to stop the constant
rate changing.

Once this was done I achieved a pretty constant 800Kbytes per sec,
more testing to follow.
